Dr. Denton Cooley Honored in Greece

HOUSTON (June 5, 2007) - Dr. Denton Cooley, president and surgeon-in-chief of the Texas Heart Institute, was recently honored as one of seven cardiovascular surgeons at the first modern Symposium of Seven Wise Men in Greece. The symposium is a Greek tradition which began 2,600 years ago to provide an intellectual foundation for addressing the most challenging issues of the day. The seven sages gathered to provide leadership, guidance and inspiration. The seven cardiovascular surgeons honored in the recent symposium were acknowledged for their contributions to cardiovascular medicine and the advancements which have had a global impact on the 20th century and beyond.
Among the other honorees were Drs. Albert Starr of Portland, Oregon; Adib Jatene of Sao Paolo, Brazil; Donald Ross and Magdi Yacoub of London, U.K.; Alain Carpentier of Paris, France; and Juro Wada of Tokyo, Japan. They were recognized by the President of Greece, Mayors of Athens and Delphi and held round table conferences in both historic centers. They received plaques and medals to commemorate their major contributions to the evolution of cardiac surgery during their careers.
